Cuba Leads the World in Doctors Per Capita
Despite 1950s cars, Cuba boasts 8.4 doctors per 1,000 people, doubling Switzerland's ratio.
If you walk down the streets of Havana, you will hardly think of Cuba as a competitive country in global metrics: they still drive cars from the 50s, and though beautiful, most of Havana’s buildings are slowly falling apart. But there is one metric the country leads the world in: doctors per capita.
The country’s physician-to-population ratio is 8.4 per 1,000 — compared to Switzerland’s 4.3. Cuba also provides medical care at low or no cost to citizens of other developing countries when they seek treatment due to war or natural disasters.
The WHO has declared Cuba the world’s leader in providing care personnel to the developing world. The only two countries with higher physicians per capita are Qatar and Monaco.
