LatAm Countries Have Scored 27% of All World Cup Goals

We looked at all the goals scored before Qatar. The top two goal-scoring countries in World Cup history are Latin American. Brazil eclipses everyone else with 229 total goals. That's a whole 92 more goals than second-place Argentina, and it also leads in terms of championships, securing a total of 5. Brazil and Italy are the only two nations to win back-to-back titles — Brazil in 58' and 62' and Italy in 34' and 38'. With three trophies, Pele is the player with the most wins ever.

As the Qatar World Cup approaches the first elimination phase, millions of Latin Americans hope that a country from our region will win a title after a 20-year hiatus. The last four have all been awarded to European teams.

Every World Cup brings a set of records to be broken, and this one is no exception. For instance, Canada finally scored its first goal in its second appearance ever. Other records are less exciting — Qatar became the worst-performing host in history after a 2-0 loss to the Netherlands. In an inexplicably massively expensive event plagued with controversy, accusations of human rights abuse, and so-called celebrity boycotts, perhaps millions are happy to see Qatar eliminated so brutally.

At the time of this writing, only Ecuador has been eliminated from the LatAm teams, but chances are looking tough for Mexico, Costa Rica, and Uruguay. Argentina and Brazil are likely to move on, as expected.
